When the beds are stacked, the top of the mattress is 66cm.

When the beds are stacked, the top of the upper mattress sits at 66cm from the floor. This is a comfortable height for children and young teenagers to climb in and out safely, whilst keeping the upper bed low enough that parents can easily make the bed and attend to children. The height also ensures the ceiling doesn't feel oppressively close for the child on top. Each bed frame is built from extra thick timber to ensure stability when stacked, and the weight of the upper bed keeps it securely in position.
Yes, that's one of the key benefits of stackable beds. They can be used stacked when you need to maximise floor space, or separated into two independent single beds when you have more room or when siblings reach an age where they want their own space. This flexibility makes stackable beds an excellent long-term investment that adapts as your family's needs change. Both beds are identical in construction, so either can be used as the bottom or top bed, and both work perfectly as freestanding single beds.
We can build stackable beds to fit your existing mattress, so there's no need to buy specific sizes. If you're starting from scratch, standard UK single mattress sizes work perfectly. Simply tell us your mattress dimensions (or the size you plan to purchase) when requesting a quote, and we'll build the beds to fit precisely. We can also make beds to fit any custom or non-standard mattress sizes. The mattress depth doesn't affect the bed construction, though very thick mattresses will increase the overall height when beds are stacked.
Stackable beds sit relatively low compared to traditional bunk beds, with the upper mattress at 66cm. This lower height reduces the risk of injury from falls and makes it easier for parents to supervise and tend to children. However, as with any elevated sleeping arrangement, we recommend considering your child's age, maturity and comfort level with heights. Most families find children aged 6 and above are comfortable with stackable beds. The solid construction and extra thick timber ensure the beds are structurally very safe and stable when properly stacked.
All our stackable beds come with a clear varnish finish as standard, showcasing the natural beauty of the solid redwood whilst protecting the wood from everyday wear. We offer an extensive range of painted finishes including wood stains (Medium Oak, Dark Walnut, Light Oak), vibrant colours (Sage Green, Cobalt, China Rose, Mustard) and classic neutrals (Soft White, Antique White, various greys). Many parents choose fun colours for children's rooms, or neutral tones that will transition as children grow.
